Fulbright Foreign Student Program (Master’s Degree) Spotlight: Diana Abazi


Applying and preparing for an opportunity like a Fulbright Scholarship can be a nerve-wracking experience. In order to ease your mind and provide you with an insider’s look into the Fulbright experience we decided to catch up with our Fulbright alumni and on-program scholars. We asked them to reflect on their Fulbright experience and answer our insightful questions.
We are continuing our series of questions with our Fulbright Foreign (Master’s Degree) Alumna 2022-2023, Diana Abazi, who completed her master’s degree in Special Education, at Portland State University.
What is your educational and professional background?
I have been a Speech and Language therapist for five years, working and volunteering in various schools and clinics before pursuing my master’s degree in Special Education in the US, to expand my knowledge and provide better education and therapy for my students.
Why did you choose to apply for the Fulbright Program?
Because the Fulbright Program offers way more than academic and professional achievement, it’s a life-changing opportunity for cultural exchange, personal development, and worldwide involvement. Its great prestige and infinite opportunities drove me to apply.
What is the most valuable component you have gained from the program?
This two-year journey has been an incredible period of self-growth and learning. I can easily consider it the best experience of my life. I feel honored to have had the opportunity to learn from exceptional professors who inspired and taught me invaluable lessons about special education in the U.S. Besides amazing mentorship, which I consider priceless, I build meaningful friendships with people from all over the world, gaining a deeper understanding of their cultures.
How are you implementing the knowledge gained as a part of the program at your home institution?
Schools, institutions, and clinics can benefit so much from the educational system in the US, with its different approaches, techniques, and perspectives. I am hoping to be part of a team that will become that bridge towards better education for our amazing students.
How was the application process for you, and what advice do you have for prospective candidates?
The application process was very comprehensible and easy to follow. A tip for the candidates would be to feel free to reach out to the local Fulbright staff, since they have always helped me with any confusion/questions that I’ve had.
What is the biggest culture shock you are experiencing in the U.S?
Large food portion sizes. During my stay there, I never finished one entire dish in one sitting.
What is your favorite place you have visited while participating on the Fulbright program?
Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.
What is your favorite American dish/food?
American barbecues are something special. Being invited to one is a meaningful way of showing appreciation, and every dish prepared is so delicious.
