Applying and preparing for an opportunity like a Fulbright Scholarship can be a nerve-wracking experience. In order to ease your mind and provide you with an insider’s look into the Fulbright experience we decided to catch up with our Fulbright alumni and on-program scholars. We asked them to reflect on their Fulbright experience and answer our insightful questions.

We are continuing our series of questions with our Fulbright Foreign (Master’s Degree) Student, Trim Ternava who just completed his master’s degree in Energy Economics at the Rice University.

What is your educational and professional background?

I am an electrical engineer with 10 years of experience in the Energy Sector. During this time, I had several job positions in private sector starting from Electrical Engineer, Chief of Projects, CEO and project developer. Since 2016 I have been also engaged as Energy Expert for different international organizations operating in our country.

Why did you choose to apply for the Fulbright Program?

The main reason is the reputation that Fulbright Program has in the world and I wanted to be part of it.

Tell us about your experience as a Fulbrighter in the U.S.?

This is by far the best experience of my life. Luckily, the Fulbright network at my University (Rice University) is very organized and we have weekly/monthly events. I was also selected to attend Fulbright Seminar “Action in the Face of Crisis: Responding to Coastal Climate Change in New Orleans.”

During this time together with other scholars from different countries we learned about the impact of climate change on coastal cities and initiatives and how this iconic coastal city is responding to the climate crisis by building enhanced infrastructure, housing, and transportation with the goal of preserving its culture for the climate future and generations to come.

What is the most valuable component you are gaining from the program?

The program is designed to educate future leaders and strategic thinkers in the energy sector. During this time, we are developing skills to provide insightful analysis of energy markets in order to inform future market orientation, capital asset decisions and firm strategic direction. My program is a professional master, and I am very honored to share the classes with lot of senior energy experts from different countries.

How do you plan to implement the knowledge gained as a part of the program at your home institution?

Kosova is committed to decarbonize entire energy sector. With my previous work experience and this incredible experience in the U.S. I want to help my country towards Energy transition, making sure that this will be done by maintaining energy security and price affordability.

How was the application process for you and what tips do you have for the prospective candidates?

The application process was very easy, transparent and the local staff was very helpful all the time.

What is the biggest culture shock you are experiencing in the U.S?

For me everything is as expected or even more positive. I was very surprised with the hospitality and the help from university staff which made my transition very easy.
